Natural disasters don’t plan ahead, but you can!

In the event of a natural disaster, having a preparedness plan can be a critical element in helping secure a safe transition out of danger for you, your loved ones and your property.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency's Ready campaign outlines important and low-cost measures you can take right now to protect your family, pets, and property before a major disaster.
  1. Access Alerts and Warnings - Know what disasters could affect your area, how to get emergency alerts, and where you would go if you and your family need to evacuate.
  2. Create a Family Emergency Communication Plan – Creating a plan starts with one simple question: “What if?” Create a paper copy of the contact information for your family and other important people/offices, such as medical facilities, doctors, schools or service providers.
  3. Assemble or Update Emergency Kit Supplies – Gather important supplies you will need if you must evacuate or be home without water or electricity. Include enough food, water and medical supplies needs to last your needs for at least 72 hours.
  4. Plan with Neighbors - Plan with neighbors to help each other and share resources. Almost half of Americans expect to rely a great deal on their neighbors after a disaster.
  5. Make Property Safer - Make property improvements to reduce potential injury and property damage.
  6. Document and Insure Property -  If a disaster strikes, having insurance for your home or business property is the best way to ensure you will have the necessary financial resources to help you repair, rebuild, or replace whatever is damaged. Make sure you know what your insurance policy covers before an emergency.
  7. Safeguard Documents – To keep vital records safe, store paper copies in a waterproof and fireproof box, safe, or bank deposit box. Leave copies with trusted relatives or friends.
